Talks: Unleashing Sustainability in Architecture - The Case of PVC Recycling

Join us for a series of talks that provide valuable insights into PVC and its contribution to sustainable architecture. The talks will be held in the pavilion on Friday, June 30th from 3-5 PM.

PVC, the most prevalent plastic in construction, is not merely a hidden element in pipes and cables. It's a visible, transformative force in our buildings. From the sleek lines of gutters to the modern aesthetics of windows, vinyl flooring, wall coverings, and roofing, PVC is a versatile material shaping our built environment. With an annual production of five million tons in the EU, 70% of which is dedicated to durable building products, the presence of PVC is undeniable.

As architects, you are the custodians of the built environment. The sustainability of the materials you select is paramount. We invite you to join us for a series of enlightening talks that will redefine your perception of PVC and its role in sustainable architecture.

Our distinguished speakers will guide you through the fascinating world of rigid PVC recycling, unveiling its potential to contribute to a greener future. They will empower you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about materials, enhancing your designs while minimizing environmental impact.

Speakers:

Sylvie Famelart, Senior Communications Manager, and Sarah Debbiche Krichen, Senior Public Affairs Manager, VinylPlus®, the European PVC industry's commitment to sustainable development, will shed light on how a united plastic value chain can achieve tangible results. Praised by UN representatives as a model for industries transitioning towards greener practices, VinylPlus showcases the potential of PVC.

Mette Vest Vilsbøll will present how utility companies can contribute to more circular use of plastics in Building & Construction. As Project Leader at Lemvig Vand and Klimatorium, she will introduce a ground-breaking project where PVC pipes with 70% recycled material were successfully installed. She will also present Klimatorium, Denmark’s international climate center. Klimatorium works with public and private companies, educational institutions and civilians to find sustainable solutions to the world's climate challenges. The spectacular building, designed by 3XN and SLA Architects, has won several architectural awards in Denmark and abroad.

Ole Grøndahl Hansen, General Manager of PVC Information Council Denmark, will recount how authorities and NGOs pushed the industry towards collective action. The Danish recycling system, WUPPI, will be presented as a case study on how manufacturers can unite to create positive change, as well as an example of Extended Producer Responsibility for plastic building products, which is currently under consideration in several European countries.

Massimo Forti, CEO of Ragn-Sells Danmark A/S, will brief the audience on opportunities and challenges of plastic recycling from a commercial angle. As a leading waste mangement and recycling company in the Nordic region, Ragn-Sells is investing heavily in collection and sorting of plastic from Building & Construction. Ragn-Sells Danmark recently signed an agreement with WUPPI A/S to increase the circularity of rigid PVC.
