Trees make cities come alive. The oxygen produced by the trees contributes to improved air quality and a more vibrant urban environment. And with high temperatures in summer, the trees act as a form of the cities' natural 'air conditioning'. Wavin's TreeTank® is a root cell system that optimizes the roots' growth conditions under the city's paved surfaces.

For cities, rainwater has long been public enemy number one. Urbanization and an increasingly complex infrastructure, with an expanding amount of traffic, have led to a big challenge for cities when it comes to rainwater: how do we get rid of it as quickly as possible? Rising temperatures add an even larger sense of urgency to this problem: it will increase uncomfortable living conditions in the cities we live in. Cities are struggling more than ever to deal with extreme amounts of rainwater.

Water as an opportunity

One of the most important reasons why cities are not able to handle big amounts of rainwater is because they are not designed for it, yet. Our streets and roads aren’t all able nor equipped to absorb current rainfall. Fortunately, tides are shifting more and more towards the idea that water can also be used to cool cities. Either via bringing back to surface water like lakes and ponds, but also to water trees.

Trees are vital

We need trees in the places where more and more people are packed together, in cities. And that is because trees are natural problem solvers. By providing oxygen as well as shade they can easily combat heat stress, if we give them a helping hand in their growth. Bigger and healthier trees can help make cities future proof by acting as a natural air conditioning unit.

Lack of space

But trees need space to grow, above and below ground. However, the existing infrastructure and the need to keep building new homes for the growing population don’t allow them.

Wavin found a solution for that: Wavin TreeTank®. A system consisting of modular units installed around a void where the tree will be positioned. After the tree is planted, it will be anchored, and pipework is installed for irrigation and ventilation. The Wavin TreeTank® system allows the roots with water and access for air nutrients. Because of this the roots get the space they need to grow and branch out. At the same time, the system acts as a barrier against the roots causing damage at the ground level, like pavements and the pipework. In the short video below, the working of TreeTanks is very well explained.
